Background of the Study

The construction industry is one of the most hazardous work environments, accounting for a significant percentage of work-related injuries and fatalities worldwide (Okonkwo & Yusuf, 2023). In Nigeria, the construction sector experiences high rates of occupational accidents due to poor safety regulations, inadequate health services, and lack of occupational health professionals (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). While safety engineers and occupational health officers play critical roles in hazard prevention, nurses have increasingly become vital in promoting workplace health and safety through injury prevention, health education, and emergency response (Olalekan & Musa, 2023).

Nurses in occupational health settings provide first aid, manage workplace injuries, conduct health surveillance, and educate workers on safety measures, thereby reducing workplace-related illnesses and fatalities (Adebayo & Usman, 2024). In Kaduna State, where industrial and infrastructural development is on the rise, the need for occupational health services, particularly in the construction sector, has become more critical than ever. However, despite the significant role nurses can play in occupational health, their involvement in the construction industry remains understudied.

This study seeks to evaluate the role of nurses in preventing occupational hazards in Kaduna State’s construction sector. By assessing their contributions, challenges, and effectiveness in reducing workplace injuries, this research aims to highlight the importance of integrating nurses into occupational health programs in the construction industry.

Statement of the Problem

The construction sector in Kaduna State faces persistent challenges related to occupational health and safety, including high rates of workplace injuries, exposure to hazardous materials, and inadequate medical response to accidents (Olawale & Danjuma, 2023). Despite the recognized importance of occupational health services, there is limited integration of nurses in construction site safety programs. Many construction workers lack access to immediate medical care, and preventive health measures are often overlooked due to the absence of trained nursing professionals on-site (Ibrahim & Okafor, 2024).

Additionally, occupational health nurses can play a crucial role in identifying workplace hazards, providing safety training, and ensuring compliance with health regulations. However, there is a lack of empirical data on how effectively nurses are contributing to occupational safety in Kaduna State’s construction industry. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating nurses’ involvement in hazard prevention and recommending strategies for improving occupational health in the construction sector.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in preventing occupational hazards in Kaduna State’s construction industry.

  2. To evaluate the challenges faced by nurses in implementing occupational health and safety measures at construction sites.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing nurses’ contributions to workplace safety in the construction sector.

Research Questions

  1. What roles do nurses play in preventing occupational hazards in Kaduna State’s construction industry?

  2. What challenges do nurses face in implementing occupational health and safety measures at construction sites?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance nurses’ effectiveness in construction site safety?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses play a significant role in preventing occupational hazards in Kaduna State’s construction industry.

  2. Nurses face substantial challenges in implementing occupational health and safety measures at construction sites.

  3. Enhancing nurses' involvement in workplace safety programs improves health outcomes and reduces occupational injuries.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in occupational health settings in Kaduna State’s construction industry. Limitations may include reluctance from construction companies to disclose safety data, variations in the level of nurse involvement across different sites, and potential biases in self-reported safety practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Occupational Health Nurse: A nurse specialized in workplace health, injury prevention, and safety management.

  • Construction Industry: The sector involved in building and infrastructure development, known for high-risk work environments.
